Phoenix Union Celebrates its Athletes and Athletic Programs

Phoenix Union celebrated its athletes and athletic programs at the Inaugural All-Phoenix Union Sports Awards, May 9 at Central High School.  Eleven schools, 138 athletes and dozens of coaches were represented.     Each school picked a Player of the Year in each sport, and from that list, each sport recognized a Phoenix Union Player of the Year and Coach of the Year.  There were also 22 All-Academic Players of the Year.

Some of the highlights: Male Athlete of the Year was Alhambra Baseball player David Avitia and Female Athlete of the Year was Betty Fairfax Soccer player Brianna Boehm.  Betty Fairfax High School was the Athletic Program of the Year and Cesar Chavez Basketball coach Gary Lee was the Coach of the Year.   Ray Manquero, a football player at Carl Hayden was the INPIERATIONAL Athlete of the Year, and Joseph Grant, a football player at Camelback won the Community Outreach Award. Chavez’ Stacie Porras was the Athletic Director of the Year. Sportscaster Kevin McCabe was the Master of Ceremony, and former North High Basketball All-State Alumnus and rising star of the Phoenix Suns, Alan “Big Sauce” Williams delivered the keynote address.
