Metro Tech reapplied and has been named an A+ School of Excellence by the Arizona Educational Foundation for the second consecutive time. The school earned the A+ label in 2014. Principal Bryan Reynoso and staff re-applied a year early in February, and received the good news April 12. The designation is normally for a three-year period, but Metro Tech will keep the honor for the next four years. A formal celebration will take place at the school, May 9.
“What this means is that our seniors have been in an A+ school for all four years,” Reynoso said. “This year was a total school effort. It included students, staff, parents that were randomly selected by the Foundation and were observed and interviewed by their review committee. The only thing we could pick were our tour guides, and they did a great job. When we announced it yesterday, you could hear screams of joy in the classrooms from the students.”
Reynoso and staff had to complete a 22-page narrative application and a selection panel of education leaders conducted a two-day site visit, visiting every classroom, and interviewing students, parents, teachers, support staff, and the administrative team.
To qualify as an A+ School, schools must demonstrate sustained high achievement or significant improvement through assessment data. Winning schools are recognized for their superior ability to identify and meet the academic and non-academic needs of their student population. Applicant schools are evaluated in the areas of student focus and support, school culture, active teaching and learning, curriculum, leadership, community and parent involvement and assessment data.
"The A+ School of Excellence™ program celebrates outstanding schools throughout Arizona and calls attention to the positive stories and successes occurring in public schools," explained AEF Executive Director, Bobbie O'Boyle. "The application and evaluation process for this program is comprehensive and rigorous. We applaud these schools for going above and beyond the norm to meet their students' needs and for achieving overall success despite the many challenges that face the education community statewide."
Thirty-nine Arizona schools were named A+ Schools this year. Metro Tech was one of eight high schools awarded.
