Phoenix Union Foundation for Education Scholarship Dinner Honorees

Carl Hayden Robotics Coach Fredi Lajvardi, Grand Canyon University President and CEO Brian Mueller and counselor Patricia Short were honored at the Phoenix Union Foundation for Education Scholarship Dinner, March 6 at the Pointe Hilton Squaw Peak.

Proceeds from the top fundraiser of the year for the 501 (c) 3 goes to post-secondary scholarships for Phoenix Union students. The dinner, sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona and attended by 300, included student entertainment, student servers and food preparers, a silent auction and live auction.

The “Alumnus of the Year,” Fredi Lajvardi, who graduated from Camelback High School (Class of 1983) has become a nationally-known advocate for STEM and robotics. His Carl Hayden students have been featured this year in a documentary, Underwater Dreams, a book and a motion picture entitled Spare Parts.

Grand Canyon’s Mueller is this year’s “Friend of Phoenix Union.” Under his direction, the growing university has partnered with the school district in many areas, from offering dual enrollment, Saturday classes for high school students, an afterschool Learning Lounge mentor program, teacher professional development, and this summer, Grand Canyon Education students will intern at Alhambra High School.

Short, from Bostrom High School, was selected as the Counselor of the Year. Nominated by her peers, She is the only counselor at the alternative high school. She has been with the District for 22 years. This is the second year, the Scholarship Dinner has honored a counselor.
