New Classifications for AIA Teams
Posted by Community Relations at 1/28/2015
New classifications for AIA teams were released January 20. There was some movement among the Phoenix Union schools. In football, PUHSD will have six teams in Division II and four in Division III. Cesar Chavez, Maryvale and North all went from Division I to Division II. Central and Alhambra moved up from Division III to Division II. South Mountain stayed at Division III, joined by Carl Hayden, Betty Fairfax and Camelback. In most sports, Division II was the most popular placement. All ten boys basketball teams are D-II, eight of 10 volleyball and nine of 10 girls basketball teams are D-11. All but one boys soccer team are D-11, but Chavez was placed in D-II. Schools have until January 30 to appeal the moves, which will be for a three-year block. Scheduling and section designations have not yet been made.
