Phoenix Union High School District In the Midst of Accreditation

Phoenix Union High School District is in the midst of a process called accreditation. Accreditation certifies to the public, that the school is a trustworthy institution of learning and validates the integrity of a school’s programs and student transcripts. It fosters continuous improvement by establishing priority areas, and identifying strengths and weaknesses and assures that schools’ purposes are appropriate and being accomplished.
The evaluator is AdvancED, an organization that has been reviewing schools for over 100 years, serving more than 30,000 public and private schools and districts in the U.S. and around the world. Schools are accredited every five years. Phoenix Union last renewed its accreditation in 2009.
The AdvancED Accreditation process includes an internal and an external review of schools. Internally, each school conducts a self-assessment, provides an improvement plan with student performance indicators and goals, as well as feedback from parents and community members. In February, a team of education experts will meet with district and school staff, students and parents to review the District. The team will focus on the learning environment through classroom observations and evaluate evidence from interviews, materials and artifacts. Parents and students will also be interviewed by the team, as stakeholder feedback is an important part of the process. The AdvancED team will prepare a final report which will be presented to the public at a special meeting of the Governing Board, Wednesday, February 11 at 2:30 p.m., summarizing AdvancEd’s findings and required actions.
