The Fab Four of Carl Hayden Robotics—former Falcons Cristian Arcega, Lorenzo Santillan, Luis Aranda and Oscar Vazquez were honored September 18 at the Hispanic Heritage Awards in Washington, D.C. The four helped Carl Hayden burst onto the scene when they defeated MIT and several other universities in an underwater robotics competition 10 years ago. Recently, they were featured in a documentary, Underwater Dreams, and a motion picture, Spare Parts will debut next year about the team. The Hispanic Heritage Awards were established in 1987 by the White House to commemorate the creation of Hispanic Heritage Month in the U.S. The Hayden alumni were presented the Education Award. Other honorees came from sports, leadership, STEM, arts and entertainment. For the first time, PBS will broadcast the awards show as a one-hour special, nationally, September 29. It will air at 8 p.m. on KAET Channel 8 here in Phoenix.
