Phoenix Union qualified seven teams for the 40-team State Academic Decathlon, held Friday and Saturday, at ASU West, and Cesar Chavez led the PUHSD contingent with a seventh place finish. It was the Champions’ fourth Top 10 State finish in five years, including seventh place finishes in 2009-10 and 2010-11. Alhambra placed 11th, South Mountain was 18th. Maryvale, Trevor Browne, Betty Fairfax and Bioscience also qualified and competed at State. Canyon del Oro won the event, followed by Boulder Creek and Mesa Mountain View. It was the second year in a row that seven PUHSD teams made it to State, the most ever for the District.
Top performers included South Mountain’s Markaya Hill and Eugenia Anane-Wae, who finished in a five-way tie for first place and gold medals in the Scholastic Interview event. Each scored a perfect 1000 points, and each also won gold medals for best Overall Interview scores.
