The District’s Teaching American History Grant seminar series recognized Black History Month by bringing noted historian Dr. Clarence Taylor of City University of New York to town to discuss Civil Rights, and other guests examined the integration of public schools in Phoenix. Taylor presented to students at South Mountain February 22 and conducted a seminar with 34 Phoenix Union history teachers who make up the Teaching American History cadre February 23 at historic Carver High School. The Saturday seminar included presentations by Bill Straus of the Anti-Defamation League and Judge Ellie Finn, who discussed the Phoenix Union desegregation case that closed the city’s segregated Carver High School , and integrated Phoenix Union months before the landmark Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court case. Finn is the daughter of Herbert Finn, one of the attorneys in the Phoenix case.
